Ackee - Exotic Fruit of Caribbean Cuisine

I heard about this strange looking fruit from a Jamaican friend of mine.  He used to cook for us whenever we would visit him.  One popular dish from Jamaica is salted codfish and ackee.  If you live near a Jamaican restaurant or are able to find ackee at a grocery store I highly recommend it.  It turns out that ackee has a number of health benefits as well.  It is a pretty good source of protein with 2.9 to 8.9 grams per 100 grams of the fruit.  Ackee also is a good source of vitamin C, potassium, phosphorus, calcium and iron.  Definitely a good addition to spice things up for a healthy culinary lifestyle.  It should be noted for safety that the seeds are poisonous, as are the arils if they are under ripe.  Basically once the fruit splits open like the picture above and the arils are exposed to sunlight you are good to go, just keep in mind to always avoid the seeds.  Well happy eating people, let your medicine be your food and your food be your medicine.  #healyourself #mnr.  Peace.
